JEE Main is a computer-based online test administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for candidates interested in enrolling in undergraduate engineering programmes at prestigious engineering colleges in India. There were 2 Sessions of the JEE Main 2023, which was the qualifying exam for the JEE Advanced 2023. This engineering entrance is pretty challenging and requires a proper preparation approach.

When it comes to a strategic approach, analysing the previous years’ exams can do wonders for the JEE aspirants. This page will highlight the detailed breakdown of JEE Main 2023 paper analysis for all four sessions.

This analysis is based on feedback from India’s JEE experts and the students who took the exam. The paper analysis will help students understand the level of difficulty of questions and every topic with its weightage. Candidates can use this question paper analysis to prepare for the upcoming JEE exams.

JEE (Main) 2023 Session 1 Exam will be held from 24th January to 31st January, 2023. According to the students, the paper was moderately difficult. Topic coverage was fairly balanced in all three subjects. There were several good questions in the paper. Overall, Mathematics was the most difficult, whereas Physics and Chemistry were on the easier side.

**Mathematics -** Mathematics was moderate for the majority of students. Some questions, as expected, required extensive calculations. There were eight problems from calculus, seven from algebra, three to four from vectors in three dimensions, and four from coordinate geometry. Trigonometry also had a place in this part. Regular practice and mock examinations would be quite beneficial in scoring well on these sorts of questions.

**Physics -** Physics paper was easy for most of the students. Questions were asked from all major chapters, including two from optics, five from mechanics, two or three from thermodynamics, and one each from communication systems, experimental physics, and units and measurements, among others. Six questions on electricity and magnetics were asked. There were also questions regarding waves and oscillations, as well as current. As predicted, numerical questions had more numbers than theoretical questions, and practically all numerical questions were formula-based questions.

**Chemistry -** This paper was simple to moderate, and the entire paper was based on NCERT. There were about equal numbers of problems from the Physical, Inorganic, and Organic areas of Chemistry. The majority of the numerical value-based problems were from Physical Chemistry. Along with usual topics, the publication included chapters on biomolecules, polymers, chemistry in everyday life, and environmental chemistry.

According to the initial reactions of students who had taken the test, the question paper's degree of difficulty was moderate, but the mathematics section was challenging. The easiest of the three topics was physics. Let's go into further details:

**Mathematics -** Moderately difficult level. Algebra & Calculus were given more weight in the questions than nearly all other chapters. Questions from the circles and ellipses have mixed ideas of being difficult or moderate. Permutation and combination, two questions of probability, three questions from matrices, quadratic equations, and complex numbers in algebra were also covered in the problems. There were 2 to 3 questions on differential equations in calculus. 3D Geometry & Vectors had three questions. According to the students, the calculations for the numerically based questions were lengthy.

**Physics -** Overall, this was a well-balanced portion. Gravitation, Laws of Motion, Fluids, SHM, Work, Rotational Motion, Power & Energy, Heat & Thermodynamics, Kinematics, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, AC Circuits, and Communication Systems were among the scoring topics. Optics and Current Electricity both had more than two questions. The numerical problems were simple.

**Chemistry -** Easy to moderate level of difficulty. Inorganic and Physical Chemistry was given more weightage. Organic Chemistry had various complicated concepts, such as Phenols and Alcohols, GOC, and Biomolecules. Questions in Physical Chemistry included Mole Concept, Ionic Equilibrium, Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, and Thermodynamics were asked. Physical Chemistry's numerical problems were lengthy yet simple. Coordination Compounds, Ores & Metallurgy, Environmental Chemistry, and Chemistry in Everyday Life were among the topics covered in Inorganic Chemistry.

According to the initial response from students, the general difficulty level of the September session paper was moderate. Mathematics was found to be the most difficult of the three disciplines, while Chemistry was the easiest. Let’s discuss this in detail.

**Mathematics -** The Math section was moderately difficult. Progressions, Circle, Straight Line, Permutation and Combination in, Binomial Theorem, Matrices, Ellipse Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, and Definite Integral, were the most frequently asked topics in Calculus, Algebra and Coordinate Geometry. Only a few Numerical-based problems needed long calculations.

**Physics -** The level of difficulty in Physics was simple to moderate. Kinematics, optics, electrostatics, magnetism, current electricity, EM waves, heat and thermodynamics, communication systems, and modern Physics were among the areas of Physics that had the higher weightage in the exam.

**Chemistry -** The complexity of Chemistry was simple to moderate. Questions were on the topics such as Ionic equilibrium, ElectroChemistry, Coordination compounds, and Everyday Chemistry. Organic and inorganic Chemistry chapters were given more weightage in the Chemistry section of this exam.

Now let us discuss the third session.

According to experts, the JEE Main Session 3 (August) paper is moderately challenging. Physics was the easiest of the three, while Mathematics was easy to moderate with some relatively lengthy calculations. Chemistry was a bit difficult. Let us see the subject-wise analysis.

**Mathematics -** The Mathematics paper was moderately difficult and time-consuming owing to the extensive calculations needed. Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors & 3D, and Algebra were the most commonly questioned topics. Almost all of the topics were adequately covered.

**Physics -** The Physics section was the easiest of the three topics. There were a lot of numericals that were mostly formula-based. Overall, the paper was considered the simplest of all.

**Chemistry -** The Chemistry paper was moderately difficult. The papers for both shifts were entirely based on NCERT textbooks. Eight of the numerical problems were from Physical Chemistry whereas the remaining questions were from Organic Chemistry.

The JEE Main July Session 2 Papers were considered to be of a moderately difficult level by the students. Mathematics was the most difficult of the three subjects, whereas Physics was considered the easiest.

**Mathematics -** The Math paper was moderately difficult, containing questions from almost every chapter with weightage on Calculus and Algebra. According to students, the numerical-based questions were time-consuming. A few students also mentioned that it was tricky and difficult for them.

**Physics -** The Physics paper was easy and scoring, overall a balanced paper. Some scoring questions were asked from the chapters of Laws of Motion, Kinematics, Gravitation, Fluids, Power & Energy, Rotational Motion, Heat & Thermodynamics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, Communication Systems and AC Circuits.

**Chemistry -** The difficulty level of the paper was easy to moderate. Physical and Inorganic sections were given higher weightage. Coordination Compounds, Environmental Chemistry, p Block, Ores & Metallurgy, and Chemistry in Everyday Life were among the top chapters covered in Inorganic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry included a wide range of topics, including Phenols and Alcohols (in chain reaction form), GOC, and Biomolecules.

The overall difficulty of the JEE Main Paper Session 1 (February) was Easy to Moderate. In terms of difficulty, Mathematics was Moderate whereas Chemistry was the easiest.

**Mathematics -** The paper was of moderate difficulty. The questions were mostly from Calculus and Algebra. Students stated that the Numerical Section was lengthy and difficult. Weightage was given to chapters such as Vectors, Probability, Matrices, Three-Dimensional Geometry, and complex numbers in Algebra.

**Physics -** The paper level was easy and balanced. A few fact-based questions from the NCERT for class 12 were also given. Electrostatics, Magnetism, Current Electricity, and AC circuits were the topics. A few numerical problems required long calculations but were simple.

**Chemistry -** A moderate-level paper. Compared to Physical and Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry was given more weight. Physical Chemistry questions were only asked in the Numerical Section.

According to experts, the paper was well-balanced, with almost all topics in each subject being covered, and the students were able to finish it within the allotted time.

**Mathematics -** Mathematics question papers were moderately tough. If we look at the weightage per chapter, Calculus and Algebra were given a lot of weightage. According to the candidates, some questions were quite tricky and difficult.

**Physics -** Out of all the papers, Physics questions were the most difficult. All of the questions were based on the NCERT textbooks for classes 11 and 12. Modern Physics and Semiconductors were given more weightage. Despite the difficulty level, candidates were able to complete the paper within the time limit.

**Chemistry -** The paper was simple and less difficult. Inorganic Chemistry was given more weightage. However, the numerical questions came from Physical Chemistry.

The first JEE Main paper consisted of 75 questions totalling 300 points. There were 25 questions in each part of the paper to be attempted. The marking method for multiple choice questions (MCQs) and numerical questions was +4 for right answers, -1 for incorrect answers, and 0 for questions that were not attempted.

As per the students, the Maths and Physics portions of the JEE Main 2020 included lengthy questions. The weightage of questions from Class 11th was more than that of Class 12th for all three subjects — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

**Mathematics -** This section was moderately challenging and several questions required lengthy calculations. The majority of the questions were from the Algebra and Coordinate Geometry chapters.

**Physics -** This part of the exam was simple to moderately challenging with "lengthy" numerical problems. Compared to MCQs, numerical questions were easy. The Chemistry portion included direct questions from NCERT textbook chapters on Inorganic Chemistry, with Class 11th topics receiving higher weightage.

**Chemistry -** This portion included direct questions from NCERT textbook chapters on Inorganic Chemistry, with Class 11th topics receiving higher weightage.

After evaluating the question, experts concluded that the overall difficulty of the paper was moderate and that the marking scheme for subjects such as Math, Physics, and Chemistry was evenly balanced.

**Mathematics -** The difficulty level of the Maths question paper was fairly moderate. There were 9 Algebra questions, 8 Coordinate Geometry questions, 9 Calculus questions, and 4 questions from Probability, Mathematical Reasoning, and Statistics. Candidates who appeared in the exam reported that the questions required a few calculations that took a little longer to complete and attempt all of the questions.

**Physics -** The toughest part of the JEE Main 2019 exam, as usual, was the Physics section, which had difficult problems that demanded even more logical and reasoning abilities. The Physics section was allotted a total of 30 marks. There were 13 questions from Electromagnetic, 8 from Mechanics, 2 from Contemporary Physics, 3 from Optics, 3 from Thermodynamics, and 1 from SHM and Waves.

**Chemistry -** Of the three sections, Chemistry was the simplest and highest scoring. Inorganic, Physical, and Organic Chemistry all had equal weightage. However, class 12th was given more importance with 17 questions, while 13 questions were from class 11th. Inorganic Chemistry had 8 questions, Organic Chemistry had 10, and Physical Chemistry had 12 questions.

Some experts consider that the general difficulty level for the JEE Main 2018 paper was moderate, while others believe that a few questions were difficult. Overall, the JEE Main 2018 exam was a little challenging. A few questions on the paper were simple, but a large number of them needed lengthy answers.

**Mathematics -** The overall level of difficulty for the Mathematics exam was a little high. All of the chapters were included in the questions, which were conceptual in nature and similar in style and strategy to the JEE Advanced exam. There were seven to eight lengthy questions, but there were also a few simple ones. Class 11 and 12 syllabuses were given equal weightage.

**Physics -** Compared to the previous year, the questions on the Physics paper were generally a little bit more challenging. Almost all of the topics recommended by CBSE for JEE Main were covered.

**Chemistry -** The difficulty level of the Chemistry paper was average. Physical, organic, and inorganic Chemistry were all given equal weightage. The overall paper was evenly distributed, with both conceptual and numerical problems.
