Rajasthan Judicial Service Exam

The exam is open to all Indian legal graduates between 21 to 40 years of age. There are three stages in the selection process for RJS, RJS Prelims, RJS Mains, and viva-voce/interview round. The knowledge of Civil law and Criminal law, along with 10th and 12th standard English and Hindi language, is integral to cracking the first two stages of RJS. As for the viva-voce/interview round, candidates must be well versed in the social customs and dialects of Rajasthan. Their confidence and spontaneity will also be judged in this round. 

There are three phases in the selection process of the RJS exam, namely RJS Prelims, RJS Mains, and Viva Voce (Interview) round. The RJS Prelims exam is an objective paper of 100 marks, whereas the RJS Main exam is a descriptive test with 4 papers. The viva-voce/interview round is the last stage of RJS selection and consists of 35 marks. It tests candidates’ proficiency in the Rajasthani dialects and their knowledge of the customs of Rajasthan.

Rajasthan Judicial Services (RJS)

Rajasthan Judicial Services or RJS exam is held to fill vacancies/posts in the Civil Judge Cadre in the state. The exam is conducted annually by the Rajasthan High Court and is one of the most sought-after exams in the legal profession.

RJS Eligibility Criteria

Qualification: Candidates must have a Bachelor's in Law (Professional) LLB from any University established by Law in India and recognized as such under the Advocates Act, l961.

Age: The minimum age to apply for the RJS exam is 21 years, and the maximum age is 40 years. The candidate should meet the age criteria as Rajasthan High Court prescribed at the time of releasing notification. Certain age relaxations are allowed to candidates from reserved categories and have been mentioned in the table below:

Nationality: Candidates must be citizens of India to be eligible for the posts under RJS.

Skills: Candidates must be proficient in Devanagari Script. They must have knowledge of Rajasthani dialects and social customs.

Physical Fitness: The candidates have to clear a physical fitness test according to the latest guidelines by Rajasthan High Court.

Character: According to the RJS eligibility criteria, a candidate must have Good Character to apply for the exam. Candidates must present three-character certificates:

  1. Issues by the Dean/Principal of your university, college, or school.
  2. Two character certificates issued not more than 6 months before the time of registration for the exam. Issuers must not be directly related to the candidate or from the educational organizations from which they graduated.

RJS Exam Scheme

There are three phases in the RJS examination; Prelims, Mains, and Vive Voce/Interview round. The Prelims exam is an objective paper, and the Mains exam is a descriptive paper. Both the papers test the legal knowledge and language proficiency of the learners. Learners who clear the Prelims and Mains exam are called for a Viva Voce or interview round. 

RJS Prelims Exam Pattern

The RJS Prelims exam is an objective paper with three sections, Law, Hindi, and English. The Law section has 70% weightage, and the Language section has 30% weightage (15% of Hindi and 15% of English). There is no negative marking in RJS Prelims 2022. The minimum qualifying marks for Unreserved category candidates appearing for RJS Prelims if 45%, and for SC/ST candidates is 40%. The number of candidate to be admitted to the main examination will be fifteen times the total number of vacancies (category wise). The marks of RJS prelims are not added to the final merit list of RJS. Learners need to pass the exam to appear for the RJS Mains.

RJS Mains Exam Pattern

Candidates that clear the RJS Prelims examination can appear for the RJS Main. RJS Mains will be a descriptive examination with 2 Law and 2 Language papers. The Law section papers will be 3 hours each, and the Language section papers will be 2 hours each. Candidates that secure 40% aggregate marks in the RJS Mains exam shall qualify to appear for the RJS Viva voce or interview round. The number of candidate to be admitted to the interview shall be, as far as practicable, three times of vacancies (category wise).

RJS Viva Voce (35 Marks)

The Viva Voce or interview round is the last stage of the RJS examination. Candidates that qualify Prelims & Mains and have scored 40% aggregate and 35% in the Law papers are called for the interview round. The Viva Voce round tests the learner's knowledge of Rajasthan's social customs & dialects and their legal expertise and personality. Candidates can also be asked questions on current affairs and modern-day problems.
