CBSE Class 12th Exam Pattern 2023

The CBSE class 12th exam pattern will help you get a rough idea of preparing for your exams, as there may be different marking schemes for different subjects. Mostly, English (core) and Mathematics papers have different exam patterns than the rest of the subjects. The English (core) paper is held in 100 marks total as there is no practical exam, and the rest of the subjects consist of a total of 80 marks (theory) and 20 marks (practical). These theory exams are to be completed in 2 hours. The timing for every subject in CBSE class 12th is the same.

  1. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory
  2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E. All the sections are compulsory.
  3. Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two marks each, Section C contains five questions of three marks each, section D contains three long questions of five marks each and Section E contains two case study based questions of 4 marks each.
  4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
  5. Use of calculators is not allowed.
Chemistry 5
  1. There are 35 questions in this question paper with internal choice.
  2. SECTION A consists of 18 multiple-choice questions carrying 1 mark each.
  3. SECTION B consists of 7 very short answer questions carrying 2 marks each.
  4. SECTION C consists of 5 short answer questions carrying 3 marks each.
  5. SECTION D consists of 2 case- based questions carrying 4 marks each.
  6. SECTION E consists of 3 long answer questions carrying 5 marks each.
  7. All questions are compulsory.
  8. Use of log tables and calculators is not allowed
Mathematics 5
  1. This Question paper contains - five sections A, B, C, D and E. Each section is compulsory. However, there are internal choices in some questions.
  2. Section A has 18 MCQ’s and 02 Assertion-Reason based questions of 1 mark each.
  3. Section B has 5 Very Short Answer (VSA)-type questions of 2 mark each.
  4. Section C has 6 Short Answer (SA)-type questions of 3 mark each.
  5. Section D has 4 Long Answer (LA)-type questions of 5 mark each.
  6. Section E has 3 sources based/case based/passage based/integrated units of assessment (4 marks each) with sub parts.
Biology 5
  1. All questions are compulsory.
  2. The question paper has five sections and 33 questions. All questions are compulsory.
  3. Section–A has 16 questions of 1 mark each; Section–B has 5 questions of 2 marks each; Section– C has 7 questions of 3 marks each; Section– D has 2 case-based questions of 4 marks each; and Section–E has 3 questions of 5 marks each.
  4. There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. A student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.
  5. Wherever necessary, neat and properly labeled diagrams should be drawn.
English 3
  1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
  2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections-READING, WRITING and LITERATURE.
  3. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part. Write the correct question number in your answer sheet to indicate the option/s being attempted
Physical Education 5
  1. The question paper consists of 5 sections and 37 Questions.
  2. Section A consists of question 1-18 carrying 1 mark each and is multiple choice questions. All questions are compulsory.
  3. Sections B consist of questions 19-24 carrying 2 marks each and are very short answer types and should not exceed 60-90 words. Attempt any 5.
  4. Sections C consist of Question 25-30 carrying 3 marks each and are short answer types and should not exceed 100-150 words. Attempt any 5.
  5. Sections D consist of Question 31-33 carrying 4 marks each and are case studies. There is internal choice available.
  6. Section E consists of Question 34-37 carrying 5 marks each and are short answer types and should not exceed 200-300 words. Attempt any 3.
Hindi  
  1. इस प्रश्न पत्र में दो खंड है|
  2. खंड 'अ' और 'ब' | कुल प्रश्न 13 है|
  3. खंड 'अ' में 45 वस्तुपरक प्रश्न पूछे गए है, जिनमे से केवल 40 प्रश्नों के उत्तर देने है|
  4. खंड 'ब' में वर्णनात्मक प्रश्न पूछे गए है| प्रश्नों के उचित आतंरिक विकल्प दिए गए है|
  5. प्रश्नों के उत्तर दिए गए निर्देशों का पालन करते हुए दीजिये|
  6. दोनों खण्डों के प्रश्नों के उत्तर देना अनिवार्य है|
  7. यथासंभव दोनों खण्डों के प्रश्नों के उत्तर क्रमशः लिखिए!
Computer Science 5
  1. This question paper contains five sections, Section A to E.
  2. All questions are compulsory.
  3. Section A have 18 questions carrying 01 mark each.
  4. Section B has 07 Very Short Answer type questions carrying 02 marks each.
  5. Section C has 05 Short Answer type questions carrying 03 marks each.
  6. Section D has 03 Long Answer type questions carrying 05 marks each.
  7. Section E has 02 questions carrying 04 marks each. One internal choice is given in Q35 against part c only.
  8. All programming questions are to be answered using Python Language only.
